Tell us about yourself and your writings.
I am Gilu Joseph. Currently a cabin crew in Dubai. Basically from a village named Kumily in South India. Born and brought up there.
I started writing at the age of 19 , when I started knowing myself, when I started exploring the world, books, people and culture away from home. Published 3 books in Malayalam and written a song each , in five Malayalam movies. I currently write in magazines and columns. I am very passionate about the writing part in my life.
What is the first book that made you cry or moved you emotionally?
The first book that made me cry was the “broken wings” by Khalil Gibran. I love the emotions he poured out in each of those quotes.
Do you have a favourite quote or a saying that is always on your mind?
This is a quote from bible I always try to believe. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
I have always felt that anyone could write. Because every single one is having their own emotions which may not be the same in different perspectives. Writing needs a lot of patience and time, which many of the people these days are short of. Everyone has their own emotional hikes, moods, experiences and much more. Penning it down is all about interest.
How do you select the names of your characters?
I am not so much into stories where I have to name the characters. I am more into poetry where I involve more of “you” and “me”. Because I love the feel of interaction between myself to the person who is reading it. I really feel happy when some people come to me to say that they felt that the particular poem meant personally for them. My poems are not complete without the word “you” in it ..
How many hours a day do you write?
I have never made a time frame for any of my activities in life. Whenever I feel like writing something, I write. If not , I don’t. There had been so many months that I haven’t even thought of writing anything. And there were months I kept writing most of the times. Life, for me is not at all planned. Yeah, I dream of doing things but going as per plan is not my cup of tea. I take life as it comes. Same with writing.
Do you have a secret talent that has not been explored yet?
Where do you get inspiration for your songs and where did you normally write your songs?
Writing songs is completely different from writing a normal poem. Poetry is all our freedom. It’s all our call and no second person is involved in it. But when it comes to writing songs, I have to take care of the meter, it’s sounding, situation of the song, is it a duet or solo, will it be a conversation or some other perspective … lots of things to be taken care of. But somehow I enjoy writing songs because the end result is pure “happiness”. I don’t know where I get the inspiration to write songs. All I know is I enjoy it. Even I don’t have any particular place or mood to sit and write songs. It just happens when it is needed.
What has been your most enjoyable song to write? Why?
All that I wrote are from my heart. So those songs are my babies. I like them all.
Please listen to Thaniye from C/O Saira Banu. Lyrics are written by Gilu Joseph
