Please share your experience about ThappuThanda.
I would say my experience about ThappuThanda was really great and it was a great learning experience. I have never assisted anyone before. I have made short films and from short films spot to a film set was a different experience for me. In the film set, there were more than 70 members waiting for my command which cannot be seen in a short film spot. I would say I have evolved during this process as a better filmmaker.
What makes a film great for you?
According to me a film should have a good content which should be narrated in a neat and clear form. The visuals and the music must be in proper synchronisation with the narration.
What do audiences want? And is it the filmmaker’s role to worry about that?
I feel audiences want a film to be a sensible one. You can’t cheat the audience anymore with just songs and fights. If a filmmaker delivers properly, he need not worry about anything.
If there is one or more thing you think would make the Indian film industry better, what would it be?
I guess I am not experienced enough to answer this question. But since you asked me I would say a filmmaker must be given freedom to make what he thinks. A filmmaker must be believed by the producer and actors. And our Tamil Film Industry lacks in good writing. I would say using sensible writers will surely deliver good films.
Do filmmakers have any responsibility to culture?
Yes of course, it is a filmmaker’s duty to be responsible to the culture.
Share you experience with Legend Balu Mahendra.
I am glad you asked me about Balu Mahendra sir. He has always been a father figure to me. I would say he is one of the best human being I have ever met. In 2011, I joined his film school and even after the completion of my course I used to visit him regularly and spend time with him talking about films and books.
I am really blessed to be his student. First thing about sir is he will make you feel comfortable when you are with him. You will not realize that you are sitting in front of a legend. He was so down to earth and so simple.
Are electronic gadgets important to you as an director?
I don’t think so. I would say it is not a must for a director, but it will surely help you to make your work easy.
What has been your personal key to success?
I am yet to be successful but I am sure I will be. My WhatsApp status is Passion, Patience and Perseverance is definitely required for a filmmaker to be successful.
I follow it. I guess it’s applicable to all.
How did you go about casting for your films?
I will just see what my character demands and if I feel he matches my character I will surely cast him in my film. I really wish to work with actors who are well trained in acting so that it makes my job much easier.
